I was told that picture books are 32 pages but only have 28 useful pages. At first I spent a lot of time trying to make sure my page turning would keep the reader interested. Then I looked up picture book manuscripts (pb ms). Turns out I knew less than I thought.

In 2018 Marlo Garner wrote on book-editing.com and explained font usage, where word count goes, where you put contact information, what goes in the header, etc.

Harold Underdown wrote “Picture Book Manuscripts and Illustrations.” Two things he said seem important and that many children’s-authors-to-be miss.

  1. The publisher picks the illustrator. (Most of the time.)
  2. The publisher doesn’t usually want illustration notes or suggestions.
